🏳️🌈 Our Story: A Local With Legacy
The Dover Castle has been serving Leicester for over 200 years—but it’s what happened in 1964 that really shaped the pub we know and love today. That’s when one of our regulars, Graham, was first invited in. Around that time, other gay venues in the city were being cleared to make way for the Haymarket Theatre, and with the Little Theatre bar opening just across the road, the Dover naturally became a home for Leicester’s growing LGBTQ+ community.
Since then, the Dover’s been more than just a pub—it’s been a place to feel safe, to be seen, and to let your hair down. From quiet chats over a pint to full-blown Friday cabarets, the Dover’s seen decades of friendships, flings, first dates and final encores.
In the ’60s and ’70s, it was buzzing—packed with theatre folk, regulars, and the kind of joyful noise only a truly inclusive pub can create. You didn’t need to know anyone to feel like part of something.
Today, we carry that same spirit forward. We’re still proudly independent, still proudly queer, and still here for our community—whatever your reason for walking through the door.
So whether it’s your first visit or your fiftieth, welcome to the Dover. You’re always in good company here.
